Why Community Is the Most Underrated Success Factor

May 23, 2026

Jim Rohn said you are the average of the five people you spend the most time with. After decades of coaching and community building, I believe this is not just true — it is one of the most actionable pieces of wisdom ever spoken. Because if it is true, then the fastest way to change your life is not to change your habits or your goals or your strategy. It is to change your environment. And the most powerful part of your environment is the people in it.

The Science of Social Influence

Nicholas Christakis and James Fowler demonstrated in landmark research that behaviors, emotions, and even life outcomes spread through social networks like viruses. Obesity, happiness, smoking, and generosity all cluster in social networks. When you spend time with people who are building wealth, wealth-building behavior starts to feel normal. When you spend time with people who are stuck, stuckness starts to feel normal.

The Four Types of People You Need

The Mentor: Someone who is 5 to 10 years ahead of you on the path you are walking. The mentor's role is to compress your timeline — to help you avoid the mistakes they made and accelerate toward the results they achieved.

The Peer: Someone at roughly the same stage as you — facing similar challenges, building similar things. The peer relationship provides mutual accountability and a level of honesty that is rare and invaluable.

The Student: Someone you are mentoring. Teaching is one of the most powerful learning tools available. When you explain something to someone else, you discover the gaps in your own understanding.

The Challenger: Someone who disagrees with you — respectfully, intelligently, and consistently. The most dangerous community is the one where everyone agrees with you all the time.

Building Your Community Intentionally

Most people build their community by accident. Intentional community building requires clarity about who you want to become and what kind of people would accelerate that journey. Join a mastermind. Attend events where your ideal community gathers. Reach out to people you admire with genuine curiosity and a specific question.
